Skill is defined as the competence that employees possess in order to function in their role effectively. People acquire and develop skills through learning and practice.

Will signifies the degree of motivation employees demonstrate when performing a task or function in their role. Several things can impact an employee's level of will, such as confidence, professional aspirations, team climate, and organisational culture, as well as personal life and well-being.

As a leader, you need to be close enough to your team to know what skills your people possess and the proficiency of each individual, but also to recognise and understand the motivating drivers that impact their will or approach to their role.

Quadrant one shows people with high skill and high will. They are excelling and have potential for a promotion or increased responsibility.

Quadrant two shows people with low skill but high will. They demonstrate a great attitude but struggle with developing their skills.

Quadrant three demonstrates low skill and low will. These individuals have poor engagement and lower performance.

Quadrant four shows high skill but low will. They are strong in performance but lack motivation, direction, or purpose.

Using the relevant quadrant as an indicator can help you determine the best conversation approach. For example, you might choose a supportive skills coaching session for those in the bottom half of the quadrant, or a similarly supportive or even tough love conversation for those in the left-hand low will quadrants.
