Hi. Within this lecture, we're going to see how to install Kali Linux to the VirtualBox using the iSO file that we have downloaded in the previous one. So, if you have the Kali Linux working, then you should skip this lecture because this is only for people experiencing problem in the OVA file. So, as I said before, sometimes OVA is great, most of the times it's great, but sometimes it does not work. So, if you want to, you can remove the OVA, deleting all the files. It will just completely remove the virtual machine that you have created and you can even empty the trash. And then, you can just go ahead and install the iSO file to have a working copy of Kali Linux.

Again, if your Kali Linux is already working, then you shouldn't do that. Now, I'm going to go to 'New' and I'm going to name this virtual machine Kali Linux. So, I'm going to add iSO so that I can keep track what's going on inside of my VirtualBox. You can name this anything you want. However, type will be Linux, and version will be Debian 64-bit as the previous one as usual. So, I'm going to allocate 1 GB of RAM, and as you know, we can change this afterwards. And I'm going to come over here to the hard disk part, and in the hard disk part, I'm going to say, as you can see there are a couple of options, I'm going to say 'Create a virtual hard disk'.

So, this virtual hard disk will be saved to this file location. I don't think you can change or you should change that. If you want, you can't always change that. For the file size, I'm going to allocate 40 GB. This will be used by the Kali Linux, this will be deducted from your own hard drive. And again, if you delete it later on, it will be free, don't worry about it. You shouldn't change anything over here. For the hard disk file type, I'm going to go with the VDI, and dynamically allocate it.

Obviously, it creates the virtual machine, but we're going to have to go into the settings and adjust something because we haven't even connected with the iSO yet. So, what I'm going to do, I'm going to go into the system and if you want you can change the processors, the memory and stuff. And obviously, I'm going to take it to the NAT Network and 'Allow All' to the promiscuous mode as we have done before; don't forget to do that please. But this time we're going to go into the Storage and make sure the iSO is connected. So, this controller thing, Kali Linux iSO.vdi thing is the virtual machine hard drive that we have created in the previous step.

But right now, we have to make sure that iSO is also included in this machine. As you can see, if you come to this empty controller over here, the disk over here, Empty disk over here, you can click on the 'Choose virtual optical disk' icon and 'Choose a disk file'. Then you're going to have to find the iSO that you have downloaded, mine is on the Desktop, and just choose the iSO. That's all you got to do to connect the iSO with your Kali Linux virtual machine. So, remember this is where we have downloaded that. So, make sure your iSO has been finished downloading, and then say 'OK'. Great.

Now, I can just start this. The obvious reasons why we're not preferring the iSO over OVA in the first place is that because we're going to have to install it manually. As you can see, Kali Linux starts with this screen, and if you don't choose anything or if you just hit 'Enter', it will guide you through the installation process which will take a little bit of time. Now, as you can see, it asks you to select the language. I'm going to go with English, but if you want, you can choose your own local language as well. I generally don't want to change this language. But for keyboard, for example, I'm going to go with the Turkish keyboard because that's what I'm using. But over here, I'm just going to leave it as English, and I would suggest you to do so if you speak English because it's much more clear in menus, in error messages and something like that.

And for the location, hackers don't tend to give out their location, don't want to do that many times. So, I'm going to just go with the United States. Of course, we're not going to do anything illegal, so you can choose your own country as well. So, for the keyboard, I'm going to look for the Turkish one because I'm using a Turkish keyboard right now with the Q layout. So, I'd suggest that you choose your own keyboard over here rather than only English. So, what I'm going to do, I'm going to wait because this will just go for like a half an hour just to install this stuff.

And in the middle of the process, in-between the process, it will ask you for some questions like where to install it, what kind of selections that we want for installation. I'm going to walk you through all of them. But to keep in mind, I'm just going to go with the default selections every time. Just over here, it asks us to give a hostname for this system. And as you can see, this is a single word, it should be a single word that identifies our system. So, I'm just going to make it kali. And for the network, this is the domain name, it's asking for a domain name. If you're working for a company, for example like Atilsec Company, for example, you should come over here and write atilsec.com, or anything like that. I'm just going to give it my name .com.

So, you can do that as well. Give it your name .com, or you can just give like kali.org or something like that. It doesn't matter at this point. What I'm going to do, again I'm going to give my name .com, atil.com. So, this is important. It's going to ask us for a user and a password. So, remember we are using kalikali, now I'm going to use my name atil. And again, it's asking for username, I believe the previous one was our full name. So, doesn't matter, I'm just going to go with atil. You should write your own name obviously over here for your username.

And this is the username that you're going to be using in order to log into the Kali from now on. Since we're using this for the first time, installing this for the first time, we can we get to actually choose our username and password. Right now, it's asking for a password and as you might remember, the password is either t-o-o-r or kali. I'm just going to give some password over here. I'm choosing my own password, I'm choosing my own username, I'm going to use them to log in. So, make sure you don't give something that you wouldn't remember later on.

So, I'm just going to say 'Continue'. It's asking for the time zone for the clock, I'm just going to go with default option, I don't care about the time on my Kali Linux. And here you go. Now, it's going to take some time and it's going to ask some questions like, here we go, it says that, if you want to use the entire disk. And by entire disk, it means that 40 GB disk that we have created. I'm just going to say 'Yes', and I'm just going to say 'Continue'. I don't want to create different partitions for any of the hard drive, so I'm just going to go for all files. And as you can see, I'm not even changing anything, I'm just choosing the default options.

So, here we go, it says that write the changes. I should have changed that one, I should have said yes. If it asks for write the changes, then we're going to say 'Yes', and just 'Continue'. And by writing the changes, it means that it's going to use the hard drive that we created it's going to install everything into that hard drive, and we will be using it. That's not something that we should say no to. But for the other options, as you might have witnessed, I haven't changed a single thing. So, if you see some kind of funny option that you don't see here, then you should go for the default one anyway. And many of these options can be changed later on.

And remember that this is just a virtual machine. I deleted and installed virtual machines like 1000 times now. Because it's a virtual machine, don't get attached to it. You may want to delete it and just reinstall it for some reason later on. So, it asks for what kind of software selection do we want to install to the Kali Linux; I'm just going to go with the default ones. We're already going to see how to use the package manager to install what we need during these classes. So, our username and password will be different than what we have seen before, like root or kali, and it doesn't matter. We're going to see what kind of things, what kind of problems we may run into if you're using different usernames, and what kind of permissions they have.

We're going to learn how to use Linux, don't worry about it. So, here you go. It says that enter device manually or choose your own device. I'm going to choose to only one of; there's only one option anyway. So, make sure you choose it and hit 'Continue'. And for some reason, my mouse does not seem to work. So, I'm just going to hit 'Tab' and hit 'Enter' to continue. Here you go. And we're going to; I believe we're coming to the end. We are finishing the installation. We've been doing this for like more than 10 minutes and I even paused at sometimes so that I can just wait for installation to be completed.

Again, it's going to take like a half an hour for you. Don't worry about it, it's the normal way. So, let's wait until it asks something more. Here you go. It says that if you want to finish the installation, just hit continue. Hit the 'Continue', of course we want to finish this installation. And I believe it's going to reboot once it's done. Here you go now, it's rebooting. And it will just take us to the Kali. Here you go, this is exactly the same thing that we have seen when we installed the OVA because it was working for me anyway. Great. Now, it's going to ask us for our username and password.

And over here, you should give your username and password that you have created while installing this. Great. Now, I'm going to log in with my username and password and let's see if we can see the background, if we can see the Desktop. Here you go, everything seems to be working. Once you make this big screen by the way, if it doesn't go full-screen, don't worry about it, I'm going to show you how to change it later on.

But right now, you can just close it down and you can just go with the next lectures. And again, if it didn't work out for you; if the iSO didn't work out for you, then just refer to this solution documentation, maybe you can see something different over there. Just make sure your virtualization is enabled, otherwise it wouldn't work. Make sure you try different options and make sure you try VMware as well if nothing else works for you.
