Before we get too deep into registering devices, it's important to understand the role device identity plays in Microsoft Entra ID. Just like users, groups, or applications, device identity is an object in Microsoft Entra ID that can be managed and configured. These identities can be used for device-based conditional access policies and mobile device management solutions, like Microsoft Intune.

When managing access to organizational resources, organizations can utilize a mixture of these different identities to adjust these permissions. I'll go more into detail about this a bit later in regards to Microsoft Entra registered devices, but for now, let's cover the three different scenarios in which device identity can apply to devices.

In Microsoft Entra ID, devices can be integrated using any of three different methods. Microsoft Entra registration is the most lightweight solution, best suited to personal BYOD devices with limited access needs. Microsoft Entra join is a fully managed solution for organization-owned devices in cloud-focused setups.

And finally, Microsoft Entra hybrid joined, which is a solution that links on-premises and cloud environments, ideal for mixed or hybrid organizations using existing legacy infrastructure. Each of these methods provides unique applications, depending upon organizational need. So, let's go over each a bit more in detail.

Up first, we have Microsoft Entra registered devices. This method allows a device to be registered to Microsoft Entra using a personal local account, without the need of an organizational account to sign into the device. While not as comprehensive as full enrollment, Microsoft registration allows conditional access policies to enforce security controls.

Devices are registered, rather than joined, to Microsoft Entra, which means they don't have full organizational ownership but are configured to enable single sign-on and meet conditional access requirements. It's ideal for bring-your-own-device scenarios, where personal and mobile devices need access to organizational resources. While registration allows for access to organizational resources, however, it is not the same as device enrollment.

Administrators do, however, have the option to require device enrollment for registered devices, with mobile device management systems, like Microsoft Intune, and even mobile application management systems to enable additional configurations, such as encryptions or password policies. It is the least intrusive for the user, as registration occurs either upon first access to a work application or manually through the device settings.

Next up, we have Microsoft Entra joined devices. Microsoft Entra join allows a device to be joined to Microsoft Entra ID by use of an organizational account. It's designed for organization-owned devices, offering full integration with Microsoft Entra ID for managing access and resources in both cloud and hybrid environments.

With Microsoft Entra join, users log in using their Microsoft Entra account, and administrators can enforce security policies through tools like Microsoft Intune or the Microsoft Configuration Manager. While Microsoft Entra joined devices can be used in both cloud and hybrid scenarios, it is especially useful for organizations transitioning to a cloud infrastructure or managing remote teams. Devices can join Microsoft Entra ID through really three main options, being the Windows Out of Box Experience, bulk enrollment, or through Windows Autopilot.

And finally, that brings us to Microsoft Entra hybrid joined devices. This method bridges on-premises active directories and Microsoft Entra ID, allowing organizations to retain existing active directory-based management, while accessing cloud resources. Devices are first domain-joined to an active directory and then subsequently registered with Microsoft Entra ID, enabling access to both on-prem and cloud resources.

With Microsoft Entra hybrid joined devices, companies retain active directory-based device policies, while gaining additional benefits from the cloud, like single sign-on. It's best for organizations that rely on group policy and where traditional imaging solutions with the Configuration Manager will remain consistent throughout the business's lifespan.

While I briefly covered each of these, all three methods do have specific differences that I did not go over.
