The AWS Certified: SAP on AWS Specialty certification has been designed for anyone who has experience managing and operating SAP workloads. Ideally, you’ll also have some exposure to the design and implementation of SAP workloads on AWS, including migrating these workloads from on-premises environments. Many exam questions will require a solutions architect level of knowledge for many AWS services, including AWS networking, compute, storage, and databases. This learning path will provide you with that knowledge and prepare you to take the AWS Certified: SAP on AWS Specialty certification exam, which was released in April 2022.

The certification itself is broken down into four distinct domains:

Design of SAP workloads on AWS,
Implementation of SAP workloads on AWS,
Migration of SAP workloads to AWS, and
Operation and maintenance of SAP workloads on AWS.

Each of these domains carry a specific percentage weighting within the exam. Each domain also contains a series of subdomains with specific required knowledge and skills, which are outlined in the official AWS exam guide that you can find here. Let’s start by taking a look at each of these domains to give you a greater understanding of the topics that will be covered on the exam.

Domain 1: Design of SAP workloads on AWS. This domain accounts for 30% of the exam content and focuses on four key areas:

Design the AWS account structure and connectivity patterns for SAP workloads on AWS,
Design a secure solution for hosting SAP workloads on AWS,
Define optimized and cost-effective infrastructure solutions for SAP workloads on AWS, and
Design highly resilient solutions for SAP workloads on AWS.

This domain will assess your understanding of best practices when designing connectivity options for SAP workloads on AWS. This includes choosing whether to use single or multiple AWS accounts, VPCs, regions, and Availability Zones, as well as the use of AWS Direct Connect or VPN to connect on-premises environments to the AWS Cloud. You should also know how to use security groups and network ACLs to control inbound and outbound traffic.

Domain 2: Implementation of SAP workloads on AWS. This domain accounts for 24% of the exam content and focuses on six areas of interest:

Deploy databases for SAP workloads on AWS,
Deploy SAP applications on AWS,
Configure high availability for SAP workloads,
Configure the disaster recovery setup for SAP workloads,
Automate deployments of SAP workloads, and
Validate AWS infrastructure for hosting SAP workloads.

This domain will test your knowledge of installing SAP applications and database systems, and configuring highly available clusters between application and database nodes. You should also know how to design disaster recovery solutions for SAP applications based on stated recovery time and point objectives.

Domain 3: Migration of SAP workloads to AWS. This domain accounts for 26% of the exam content and focuses on the following four components related to the migration of SAP workloads to the AWS cloud:

Determine the optimal migration approach for SAP workloads to AWS,
Perform a homogeneous migration of SAP workloads to AWS,
Perform a heterogeneous migration of SAP workloads to AWS, and
Optimize the migration of SAP workloads.

This domain will test your knowledge of tools and services from SAP, AWS, and third-party vendors that are used when migrating SAP workloads to the AWS Cloud, including migration from anyDB to SAP HANA. On the SAP side, you’ll be expected to know when to use SAP backup and restore, export and import with Software Provisioning Manager, and DMO of SUM. On the AWS side, you should know about the AWS Server Migration Service, Application Migration Service, CloudEndure Migration, as well as Amazon RDS along with other AWS networking, storage, and automation tools.

Domain 4: Operation and maintenance of SAP workloads on AWS. This domain accounts for 20% of the exam content and assesses you in four areas:

Monitor the underlying infrastructure of SAP environments on AWS for performance, availability, and security,
Manage the data protection of SAP applications by using AWS native services,
Perform routine and proactive maintenance activities for SAP applications on AWS, and
Review and optimize the architecture of SAP environments on AWS on a regular basis.

This domain is all about your understanding and awareness of the day-to-day operation and maintenance of SAP workloads on AWS. This includes configuring custom metrics and alarms using Amazon CloudWatch and SNS, monitoring API calls using AWS CloudTrail, managing SAP database backups using the AWS Backint Agent, and leveraging AWS Systems Manager for administration, patching, and maintenance of SAP instances.

Throughout this learning path, you will be guided through a number of courses, resources, hands-on labs, and assessments that will cover every element within the domains I just discussed. This will ensure that you have the required knowledge and sufficient understanding to enable you to pass this certification exam.
