Presenter: Welcome to the CyberFirst Futures course. In this course, you'll learn about some of the cybersecurity threats that affect individuals and businesses. You'll learn about different types of attackers and their motivations, but we'll also be looking at some of the laws which cover cybersecurity. You'll be placed in the position of somebody who works for a business during the course, and you'll learn how to set up systems and networks for the business and how to secure them. The course is split into five sections and each section has a theme. The sections are titled 'motivations for attack', 'protecting yourself from attack', 'understanding networks', 'protecting a network from attack' and 'making resources available and secure'. Each section's broken down into modules and each module will cover a specific topic. We've also some exciting labs for you to do, which will give you a chance to put what you learn into practice. As well as gaining valuable knowledge, the labs will give you a chance to learn some real-world skills, setting up and securing the technology commonly used on business networks, such as DNS, firewalls, web proxies and web servers. You'll be using virtual machines for the course, so you'll get the opportunity to create virtual machines, as they would in a typical business environment. Cybersecurity is an exciting subject and there are great opportunities for rewarding careers.

This course primarily focuses on teaching you how to protect yourself and a business, keeping devices, servers and networks secure. In order to do this, you'll learn how to use some of the tools and techniques used by hackers. If these tools and techniques are used on devices and networks without permission, you could get into trouble or could even be breaking the law. We've created the safe lab environment for you to use these tools, so please follow our instructions and enjoy the labs but remember to think carefully about what you're doing outside of the lab environment. This might be the first course you've done with CyberFirst but even if it's not, it's good to know what CyberFirst is all about. So, let's take a look at our CyberFirst video.

Presenter: As you saw in the video, technology is everywhere, and where it is, it needs protecting. This course will give you some great skills that will not only help protect yourself, you'll also gain important skills that you can take forward to protect the place that you work in the future. You'll have received some instructions on how to access the lab environment when you enrolled on the course. The labs are accessed via a web browser. When you sign up to the lab environment, you'll see a webpage which allows you to launch the labs. In this course, the labs are broken down into three sections. When ready to do the first lab, you can start the labs by clicking on the 'launch lab' button for section one, and when you launch the labs for the first time, it'll take a few minutes to get your lab ready. When your lab is ready, you'll see a screen that looks like this. There are two panels, a screen for your lab computer on the right and controls and instructions on the left. Notice that we're on the home tab. The most important control here is the 'exit lab' button. At the bottom of the screen there's a timer and every time you start your lab, it'll have eight hours on it and it'll start counting down. If the timer gets to zero, your lab'll end but don't worry, everything'll be saved. When you finish with the lab after each session, it's better to exit the lab. When you click on the 'exit' button, you'll be given a choice to either save or cancel. If you cancel, everything you've done will be wiped and the next time you start the labs, it'll start at the beginning.

So, it's important that, at the end of each lab session, when you've finished, click 'exit lab' and choose to save. When you have a saved lab, it's valid for four days. If you don't go back in within four days, it'll be cancelled. When you reach the end of section one of the labs, you'll be asked to end the lab and mark it as complete. For the next exercise, you'll be asked to move on to section two in the lab system. When you do this, everything you did in section one will be done in section two and any errors will be fixed. Then again, later in the course, the same thing'll happen and you'll be asked to move on to section three. In some labs, you might be asked to switch to a different machine and you can do this in the drop-down box at the top. There's also an option here to do a 'Control, Alt and Delete' if you're asked to do some. The other tab has got the lab instructions. In each lab, there'll be an explanation of the task, so make sure you read that carefully. Also, if you see something highlighted in red, that means it's important, so please make sure you read it carefully. To move between the pages of instructions, use the 'next' and 'previous' buttons at the bottom. The sections of the labs need to be unlocked with an access code and you'll be given the access code for the labs during the presentations, and please only complete the labs if you're asked to do them in the presentations. At the end of a set of labs, there'll be two review questions to test your knowledge, so please make sure you answer these.

These buttons allow you to turn off the pictures in the lab instructions and also, if you're lucky enough to have two screens, you can split the lab instructions into a separate window, so you can display them on another screen. Finally, if you're really enjoying the labs, there are some, if you have time, exercises for you to try but you don't have to do these if you don't want to.
