For example, retailers like Amazon analyse data describing customer purchasing patterns to optimise inventory management and personalise recommendations, enhancing both customer satisfaction and sales. Financial institutions also employ data for fraud detection, identifying unusual transaction patterns to prevent fraudulent activities. Another application you might be familiar with is personalised playlists, which companies like Apple and Spotify create using data about our listening habits. This allows us to discover new music or podcast content that aligns with our tastes and preferences.

Unprecedented access to data, as well as AI tools, has not only revolutionised how businesses operate, it has also transformed how employees work across all roles. Easy access to data has empowered faster decision-making and enabled the automation of repetitive tasks, impacting industries everywhere. For example, HR professionals can process candidate resumes much faster thanks to specialised software that automates the review process. This software uses AI algorithms to analyse resumes, match candidates to job requirements, and even schedule interviews.

Similarly, accountants and finance experts can automate tasks such as invoice processing, financial reporting, and expense management. This is enabled by the use of machine learning algorithms and natural language processing, or NLP. These are AI techniques that can understand and interpret unstructured data like emails or comments made on a social media post, reducing manual intervention and freeing up employees to focus on more strategic tasks that require human judgement and creativity.
