When you're building scalable workloads across AWS and Azure, you'll almost always need a relational database somewhere in the mix. And while you can spin up your own database on a virtual machine, that means managing patching and backups, replication, and failover all by yourself. All these can quickly turn into a full-time job.

That's why both AWS and Azure offer managed database services that take care of the heavy lifting for you. On AWS, that service is Amazon RDS. On Azure, it's Azure SQL Database.

RDS, which is short for Relational Database Service, lets you deploy fully-managed databases in the cloud using familiar engines like SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Maria DB, and Oracle.

AWS handles provisioning, patching, monitoring, and backups automatically. You choose the engine, the instant size, and the storage, and AWS takes care of keeping it healthy behind the scenes.

One of the key strengths of RDS is its flexibility. You can launch a single instance for testing, or you can enable multi-AZ deployments — which create a synchronous standby replica and another availability zone. So if the primary instance fails, AWS automatically fails over to the standby, usually within a minute or so, and it does so without manual intervention. You can also add read replicas for scaling out queries, or migrate to Aurora, which is Amazon's cloud-optimized database engine that's compatible with MySQL and PostgreSQL, but offers higher performance and durability.

Now, unlike RDS, which supports multiple engines, Azure SQL Database is focused entirely on the Microsoft SQL Server engine — and it is, of course, deeply integrated with Azure's ecosystem. It's a fully managed platform-as-a-service offering that automatically handles backups, patching, scaling, and high availability. You don't have to think about servers or storage. You just define your database and start using it.

A big advantage of Azure SQL Database is its elastic scaling, which allows you to scale compute resources up or down within seconds. You can also use the serverless tier, which automatically pauses when idle and then resumes when queries arrive. That can save a lot of cost for variable workloads. You also get built-in features like threat detection, transparent data encryption, and automated tuning that continuously monitors performance and applies optimizations for you.

In terms of availability, Azure SQL Database offers several models. For example, you can use zone-redundant configurations for regional resilience, or geo-redundant configurations to create readable secondary databases in other regions for disaster recovery.

In other words, if your main region goes down, you can fail over to another region with minimal downtime. It's very similar to what multi-AZ does in the AWSRDS, but on a global scale.

So how do they compare?

Well, functionally, they're both managed relational database platforms that remove the operational burden of traditional database management. RDS gives you choice across multiple engines and tight integration within the AWS ecosystem, while Azure SQL Database focuses on deep SQL server integration, intelligent automation, and rapid elasticity.

In a multicloud design you might even use both. For example, you might have your main workload running in AWS with RDS, but have your analytics or reporting systems in Azure relying on Azure SQL Database. Or maybe you replicate data between the two clouds for regional redundancy or compliance. The key to this is to understand the native strengths of each platform and design around them, rather than trying to force one to behave like the other.

At the end of the day, both services give you what most organizations want, which is less time managing infrastructure and more time focusing on data and applications. They handle the tedious parts like patching, backups, and high availability, so you can build faster and operate more reliably across clouds.
