When you're working in a multicloud environment, your strategy can't stop at, “Where do we store it?” It also has to answer, “How do we keep it consistent, protected, and available if something fails?”

That's where cross-cloud replication and failover come into play.

At a high level, replication is about keeping copies of your data synchronized across locations. In the context of this lesson, we're talking about AWS and Azure. Failover is what happens when something goes wrong and you switch traffic to another copy of that data, ideally with minimal disruption.

Now, both AWS and Azure have strong replication tools inside their own ecosystems. For example, AWS RDS offers cross-region read replicas, Aurora Global Database can replicate across continents with little latency, and Dynamo DB has global tables that handle multi-region rights automatically. Azure, on the other hand, offers similar capabilities through features like Active Geo-Replication for Azure SQL Database and Multi-Region Replication for Cosmos DB. These keep data available even if an entire region goes offline.

But once you start spanning multiple clouds, things get trickier. Neither AWS nor Azure have native built-in pipelines that replicate databases directly between one another. Instead, you have to design it yourself using a mix of native services and third-party tools.

So let's talk about how that might look in practice.

Imagine your primary database lives in AWS. Maybe it's in RDS or Dynamo DB, and you want to maintain a secondary copy in Azure for resilience or analytics. One approach is to use Change Data Capture, or CDC. You capture changes from your AWS database in real time, stream them into something like AWS Kinesis or Amazon MSK, and then push those events into Azure using services like Event Hubs or Azure Data Factory.

From there you can write the data into an Azure SQL Database, a CosmosDB collection, or even Azure Blob Storage for processing. It's not a single switch you flip, it's a pipeline — but once it's set up you have near real-time replication between clouds.

You can also do this in reverse. Like, for example, you maybe make your production data live in Azure SQL Database, but you want a read-only replica in AWS for analytics or redundancy. Azure Data Factory can export data into Amazon S3, or you can use integration platforms like Qlik Replicate Stream or Debezium to keep both sides in sync.

The goal is the same either way. Consistent, automatically updated data that spans clouds without relying on manual exports.

Now let's talk about failover.

If you lose a region, or even an entire provider, you want to switch to your secondary environment as seamlessly as possible. In a single cloud, that's easy. AWS handles multi-AZ failover automatically, and Azure SQL can promote a geo-replica to primary with a simple command.

But cross-cloud failover requires coordination at the application layer. Your app needs to know how to redirect database connections, validate that replication has caught up, and gracefully resume transactions on the secondary system.

For mission-critical workloads, that often means maintaining a warm standby environment in the other cloud. It's not running full traffic day-to-day, but it's kept close enough in sync that it can take over if your primary fails. That adds cost, of course, but it gives you true cross-cloud resilience, which is the whole point of a multicloud strategy.

There are, however, a few challenges to keep in mind. Latency between clouds, for example, is higher than between regions inside the same provider — so synchronous replication across clouds usually isn't practical. You'll be working with asynchronous replication, which means there's always a small delay between rights. That's fine for most workloads, but not for systems that can tolerate any data loss.

You also need to think about identity and access management. In other words, if your app fails over from AWS to Azure, your authentication model, your connection strings, and secrets all have to work seamlessly in that new environment. Tools like Azure Key Vaults, AWS Secrets Manager, and even Cross-Cloud Identity through Microsoft Entra ID or IM Federation, can help tie those pieces together.

In short, cross-cloud replication and failover aren't plug-and-play, but they are achievable with the right design. The architecture usually includes automated change capture, secure data transfer, and asynchronous replication, and a clear failover plan that's tested on a regular basis.

When done right, this strategy gives you the best of both worlds. AWS for its mature ecosystem and speed, and Azure for its integration and global scale — and that confidence that your data and your business will keep running even if one cloud goes dark.

So as you start designing your database layer for multicloud resilience, think of it as a spectrum. On one end you've got periodic backups between clouds, which are simple but slower to recover, while on the other hand you've got full-scale replication pipelines with automatic failover and near-zero downtime. As you'd expect, most organizations fall somewhere in between, balancing cost, complexity, and recovery time.
