You already know what agentic AI systems are. They perceive their environment, reason about what to do, take action, and learn from the results.

They also have five core capabilities: perception, memory, planning, tool calling, and communication. These capabilities enable autonomous operation. Now you're ready to build one on AWS.

However, before you open the console, you need to understand a fundamental choice. When do you use a Bedrock agent, and when do you call a Bedrock model directly?

This distinction determines your architecture. Let's see why.

When you use Bedrock, you have two approaches.

First, the direct model call. You invoke a Bedrock model with the Invoke Model API. You send a prompt, the model generates text, and you receive the response. The interaction is synchronous and simple. The model generates output based on your input, and that's the complete workflow.

So calling a model directly works when you need a single immediate response — text generation, summarization, classification, translation. You call the model, you get an answer, you handle the results in your application.

However, what if your task requires multiple steps? What if you need the model to decide which AWS service to call, retrieve information, evaluate the response, and then decide the next action?

A Bedrock agent operates differently. You don't call the model directly. Instead, you invoke the agent with the Invoke Agent API, and Bedrock manages an orchestration loop on your behalf.

The agent sends your request to the model. The model decides which tool to use. The agent executes that tool (typically a Lambda function), retrieves the result, and sends it back to the model. The model decides the next step, and this loop continues until the agent completes the task or reaches a stopping condition. You provide the tools, Bedrock manages the loop.

Now these two approaches differ fundamentally. Invoke Model gives you one response. Invoke Agent manages a multi-step workflow where the model and tools interact repeatedly to accomplish a goal.

So, how do you know which one to use? Ask yourself four questions.

First, does your task require interaction with external systems? If the model needs to call AWS services, invoke Lambda functions, or query databases, you need a Bedrock Agent. Direct model invocation cannot do this. If the model’s output is your final answer, direct invocation is enough.

Second, what is your latency requirement? Direct invocation is faster. One API call, one response. If your application needs an immediate answer, direct invocation is appropriate. Bedrock agents add latency because orchestration loops take time. If your task can tolerate a few seconds of additional processing, an agent works well.

Third, what is your cost tolerance? Direct invocation costs less per request because it's a single API call. Bedrock agents incur costs for each tool invocation and each orchestration loop. If you're making thousands of requests and cost is critical, direct invocation scales more efficiently. If cost matters less than accuracy and multi-step reasoning, an agent justifies the expense.

Fourth, how complex is your task? Simple requests require direct invocation: generate a summary, classify text, translate content. Complex requests require agents: automate a support workflow, optimize resource allocation across systems, coordinate actions between multiple services. The agent's ability to reason and loop enables this complexity.

Use these four factors to decide, and they will show you the right approach for your situation.

Now let's look at what happens when you invoke a Bedrock agent. When you invoke a Bedrock agent, you're not calling the model directly. You're invoking Bedrock's orchestration layer. Essentially, it's like a controller that manages the interaction between the model and your tools.

Here's what happens:

You send a request to the agent.
Bedrock forwards the request to the Foundation model.
The model evaluates the request and decides which tool to use.
That decision is returned to the orchestration layer, which invokes the appropriate Lambda function or AWS service and waits for the result.
The result is sent back to the model, which evaluates the new information and decides the next step.

This loop continues until the model determines the task is complete. Your job is simple. You define the tools the agent can use. Lambda functions execute those actions. Bedrock invokes the Lambda function, waits for the result, and sends it back to the model. You configure which Lambda functions the agent can invoke. You provide a system prompt that tells the agent what it should accomplish.

That's it. Bedrock handles the loop. Bedrock manages the orchestration. Bedrock decides when to call tools, and when to stop.

This is the main benefit of Bedrock agents. You don't write orchestration logic. You don't manage the loop. You don't decide when the model should call a tool, or when it should return a final answer.

Bedrock does all of that for you. You just focus on defining the tools and the goal. Bedrock handles the complexity.

You now understand the fundamental difference between calling a Bedrock model directly and using a Bedrock agent. You know when to choose each approach. You understand how Bedrock manages the orchestration loop so you don't have to.
